South Asia Single Region Program Makes An Impact

The South Asia Single Regional Program took place in September 2004 and included Fellows from India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka and was hailed as a success. The active members had already created a planning committee for a regional conference to be held in 2006. The Fellows had the opportunity to travel around the U.S., a chance to examine the U.S. electoral process and contribute towards issues of election monitoring and transparency, and focus on issues that were at the forefront of the U.S. way of life, such as freedom of expression, culture of philanthropy, and high cost of post secondary education and health care.

One of the Sri Lankan participants was, Executive Director of the Siyath Foundation, a community development organization based in Colombo, Ms. Kala Peiris de Costa. Kala commented on the opportunities for leadership development that the Fellowship experience provided. Her meetings enabled her to examine leadership and management from both the strategic and operational perspectives. In addition, she commented that the Fellowship enabled her to understand the qualities needed for “visionary leadership” and gave her the “motivation and determination” necessary to be a leader who can make a difference in the communities she represents.

John S. Wolf, the president of the EF said about the program, “ My experience with the 2004 South Asia Fellows has intensified my appreciation for the relevance and importance of Eisenhower Fellowship’s mission. I have seen the magic of new Fellows forming bonds that would have been impossible without EF, and the magic wrought by the program officers who map Fellows’ professional agendas that somehow transform lives”.
