“Wishing you long life”. A gentle bow of the head with palms clasped together, does this age-old greeting of the people of Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka is a 65,610sq km (25,332sq mile) tropical island of remarkable beauty. A striking feature about Sri Lanka is its amazing diversity of attractions from coastline plains with palm-fringed, sandy beaches (80ºF, 30ºC) to the central hill country (50ºF, 10ºC) over 2000 meters above sea level where the famous Ceylon Tea plantations are located and where vegetation is similar to the temperate lands of Europe. From coast to hill country the drive through, in natural splendour, is breath-taking, elevating you to the mist covered, luscious tea plantations in 3 to 4 hours.

A rich, powerful and a well-developed kingdom for over two millennia have moulded the people of the ancient land. Archaeological remains and precision-engineered irrigation systems of the first two capitals in Sri Lanka, Anuradhapura (5th Century BC) and Polonnaruwa (11th Century AD) bear ample testimony to the heights to which the civilization had risen two millennia ago.

Before the colonial days of Portuguese, Dutch and British rule (1505 – 1948) this pearl of the Indian Ocean was known to ancient Greece and Rome as TAPROBANE. In 1948, Ceylon become an independent state within the British Commonwealth and was proclaimed the Republic of Sri Lanka in 1972.

Although, well on the road to modernization, the country and its people still cherish most of their traditional values and take pride in their rich culture. Irrespective of their language, colour or creed, Sri Lankans march hand–in–hand towards a common goal: a peaceful and prosperous future.

An aspect, which continues to attract visitors from abroad, besides the beauty and diversity of the island’s scenery, is the warmth and friendship extended by the people.

The Eisenhower Fellows of Sri Lanka are proud to announce “South Asia into the Twenty First Century”, its theme for the first Eisenhower Fellowships conference in Sri Lanka. The conference, organized by the Eisenhower Fellowships Association of Sri Lanka, the Center for Policy Alternatives, and the 2004 Single Region Program Fellows from India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, promises a rich content with eminent speakers from the region participating.

Eisenhower Fellows will enjoy a reunion dinner at Mount Lavinia Hotel’s private beach on the 24th February, and a special recreational trip to a resort hotel on the 25th and 26th of February.

Join us in Sri Lanka for an unforgettable Eisenhower Fellowships experience.

I am delighted to convey my greetings and those of Eisenhower Fellowships’ distinguished trustees and devoted staff, to all of you who are gathering in Colombo for open exchange and dialogue on “South Asia into the Twenty-First Century”.

At a time when Asia is increasingly recognized as a major player in the world, economically, socially, culturally, and politically, the topics you are discussing are especially rich and ripe for thoughtful engagement. As Eisenhower Fellows, you have the unique ability to explore with one another ideas that will further mutual trust and understanding, while also contributing to solutions to age-old problems.

My special congratulations go to the Fellows from India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, and particularly the conference organizers, who are continuing in the dedicated spirit of their fellowships begun in Philadelphia one or more years ago. I further commend those of you who have journeyed from other countries, and other walks of life, for expanding the dialogue and infusing the elements of global participation that will enrich us all.

Your collective engagement reflects well on the bonds of friendship formed and on your commitment to the challenge you have undertaken to carry forward the mission of Eisenhower Fellowships – to engage emerging leaders from around the world to enhance their professional capabilities, broaden their contacts, deepen their perspectives, and unite them in a diverse global community—a network where dialogue, understanding, and collaboration lead to a more prosperous, just and peaceful world.

Message from the Chairman – Eisenhower Fellowships Association of Sri Lanka

“Exchanges bring truth and understanding to people: and understanding means peace”. Famous words of President Dwight E Eisenhower and the foundation on which the Eisenhower Fellowships have been built, have grown and thrived over a period of more than 50 years.

‘South Asia into the Twenty First Century’ is Sri Lanka’s, and the region’s, attempt to establish closer links and strengthen regional bonds. Our region faces many political, cultural, environmental, economic and educational challenges and opportunities which will be discussed at this conference. The caliber and diversity of the participants will ensure that the ideas and exchanges generated in the conference will filter into opinion and policy making. I am confident therefore that the words “Understanding means peace” will be demonstrated as following this conference.

A big thank you to the Eisenhower Fellowships Association of Sri Lanka, and the 2004 Single Region Program Fellows for putting this conference together and making it a success. Also, thank you Trustee Theodore Friend, John Summer, EF staff and Fellow Shahid Mahmud for assisting in many ways to make this conference a reality. To the participants, enjoy the conference, enjoy the content, enjoy the company, and above all enjoy our beautiful island home.

Welcome to Sri Lanka!
